Our mobile phone home search application is here (I think)

So who has a Blackberry or iPhone and some time on their hands?

Imagine that you are wondering around aimlessly in the neighborhood in which you wish to live some day. Imagine then that you can push a couple of buttons on your phone and a map instantly pops up giving you all of the homes within striking distance which are currently offered for sale in the Multiple Listing Service. Then, imagine you could push another button, a distress call if you will, and I would come flying over to show you these homes. (OK — Put that last one down as strictly optional. I might be tied up with a termite inspector anyway, but you get the idea.)

The mobile home search application along with more information is here. (It’s also at the bottom of the side bar until I figure out how to resize it.)

That’s the easy part. Now I need some help testing our new gadget. In theory, this could be the coolest thing since (insert the coolest thing you can think of, not counting Bono). The problem is that I am a Verizon user who is partial to touch screens, and my Blackberry Storm is (I am told) a couple of weeks away from being supported. Until then, I am flying blind. For all I know, I could have just posted an application which downloads directions to your nearest RE/MAX office.

Note: There is nothing at all wrong with RE/MAX; it is just that I don’t happen to work there.

    It looked fine until this:

“Dependent on your carrier and phone, Homes for Sale ranges from free up to $4.99 per month for unlimited usage, billed directly to your carrier.”

  • http://sandiegohomeblog.com Kris Berg

Yes – I think that has to do with your data plan. I am unlimited (for obvious reasons), so I kind of glossed over that part. Guess this means you can’t help?

By the way, Steve owes you a Starbuck’s gift card. I’ll remind him. :)

It no workee with my T-Mobile G phone… if you’ll excuse me, I’ll go hound the Smarter Agent folks to get that fixed.

  • Jakob

    Yay, starbucks!!!

I installed the app from the iphone app store. It’s free after all. Looks pretty good. A little sluggish, but I’ll definitely be using this next time I’m driving around and curious about listings. The current location search is awesome. I’m in La Jolla right now and I guess it identifies a “Tiffany Torgan” as the local Realtor. Ideally, I would prefer it have the listing agent phone number as the “call now” action, but that’s another debate altogether…

  • http://sandiegohomeblog.com Kris Berg

Jay – You and me both. Thanks for trying.

Jacob – Talk like that will inspire me to taketh back your lattes. The whole idea is for you to download it from my site so I am the call to action, goof. As an alternative, feel free to put my number in your address book. :)

  • Jakob

Your download worked great! Even down to the friendly voice on the other end after hitting “call”. :)

This is a sweet app. But, I’m not sure it’s worth sending them money if you are. People can get the app for free they just have to ignore the other random broker info it puts on there.

I would be much more interested in this phone app: I am driving through a neighborhood when I spy a house with a lawn ornament that looks suspciously like a For Sale sign. The plastic box intended to hold flyers is empty, as usual. But on the sign is a secret code: 6K34FCX. I key this code into my phone, and instantly all the info about this listing appears on my phone. I’m so tickled by the instant gratification that escrow closes only 4 weeks later.

Ross – I bet that sign also had a web address. If you use a smart phone, the url kind of works like that. :)
