Taking risks

This isn’t, in the strictest sense, about real estate (a theme we see repeated here too often). The video link was, however, sent to me by a my cousin, Lindsay Guttman, who happens to be a real estate agent with Prudential in Brentwood, so there is an ever-so-slight connection. In any event, if this doesn’t make you want to have a little fun, there may be no hope.

It got me thinking. There are few rituals as prescribed and predictable as a wedding. It takes a certain fearlessness to break tradition and dare to be unique. I couldn’t pick the centerpieces from the last wedding I attended out of a line up, but I guarantee I would remember this one. Is there something here that could be applied to the way we approach our businesses, not to mention our lives in general? While I’m not ready to dance at my next open house, I do like to think that we try to draw outside of the lines more often than not. And when we stop taking risks, we risk fading back into gray along with everyone else.

This must be making the rounds, Kris. A friend of mine from high school sent this out on Facebook. It’s wonderful to see the fun the wedding party is having. It’s a hoot.

Your question is a good one, how do we step outside the box, the traditions and the routine to create a memorable experience? Maybe we should ask our past clients what was memorable to them and build from that.

    Debra,

Yeah, I figured I was probably the last one on the planet to see it. I usually am bringing up the rear on these things.

Being memorable — that’s really what it is all about, isn’t it? Like the wedding, the real estate transaction is pretty mired in sameness. I am going to have to chew on this one a bit. There is a big idea lodged somewhere in my frontal lobe. I just can’t quite grasp it yet. I think what struck me is the magnitude of the departure from the expected. It wasn’t about changing a detail or two, but about redefining the whole event.

Or maybe I just think too hard.

    Hi Kris,

Redefining the whole event, that’s a huge challenge! Maybe we could come in dancing to our listing appointments?

Seriously, I know what you mean and it’s a tough one. It’s important to provide the stuff we always talk about and do: top notch service, experience, information, contract knowledge, negotiation skills, an overall understanding of the marketplace, in addition to throwing in a little fun and energy.

So how does one ratchet it up to a more memorable experience? The wedding was a joyous occasion and the wedding party capitalized on that by making the ceremony that much more joyous and fun.

What’s the client’s core emotion? Moving can bring joy, excitement, stress, fear, anger (job loss, divorce), etc. I’m sure I left a few of the emotions out of the list, but there’s a huge range of emotions and experiences. Maybe the key here is to start with the small things with each client, identifying what would be special for each person.
