Step back in time with a ride on the Poway Midland Railroad at Old Poway Park. This charming, historic train ride is a favorite for families, offering a fun and educational experience. Afterward, stroll through the Poway Farmers’ Market, where you can pick up fresh produce, handmade goods, and delicious snacks. It’s a great way to support local vendors while enjoying a relaxing day outdoors.
San Diego’s hillsides transform into a colorful paradise during the spring wildflower bloom. One of the best spots to catch the spectacle is Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, where vast fields of bright poppies and desert lilies create a jaw-dropping view. For something closer to home, check out the Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch, Mission Trails Regional Park or Torrey Pines State Reserve. The peak bloom varies each year, so check the latest wildflower updates before heading out!
For families who love the great outdoors, Blue Sky Ecological Reserve in Poway is the perfect spring break escape. This peaceful nature reserve features scenic trails, towering oak trees, and an abundance of local wildlife. Whether you’re up for a leisurely walk or a more challenging hike, Blue Sky is a great place to unplug and reconnect with nature.
Spring means baseball season, and there’s nothing quite like catching a San Diego Padres game at Petco Park! Whether you’re a die-hard baseball fan or just there for the snacks and sunshine, the atmosphere is always electric. Enjoy stunning views of downtown, indulge in local eats, and cheer on the Padres with your fellow fans. Bonus: The kids will love the park at the Park, a grassy area where they can play while you watch the game.
San Diego is home to some of the best farmers’ markets in California, offering everything from fresh produce to artisan goods. Whether you visit the Little Italy Mercato, the Hillcrest Farmers Market, or a neighborhood favorite like the Poway Farmers’ Market, you’ll find plenty of delicious local treats. It’s a great way to teach kids about healthy eating while supporting small businesses in the community.
Spring is prime whale-watching season in San Diego, with gray whales migrating along the coast. Hop aboard a whale-watching tour and experience the thrill of spotting these majestic creatures up close. Many tours also include sightings of dolphins, sea lions, and other marine life. Pro tip: Bring binoculars and dress in layers—ocean breezes can be chilly!
Bring a little springtime greenery into your home by starting an herb garden! It’s a fun, hands-on activity that kids and adults alike will enjoy. Local nurseries like Walter Andersen Nursery in Poway and Evergreen Nursery in Carmel Valley offer everything you need to get started, from fresh herbs to gardening tools. Plus, there’s nothing better than cooking with homegrown basil, mint, or rosemary!
We can’t include a list of things to do in San Diego for Spring Break without mentioning our amazing beaches. Some of our favorite beaches for those with kids are: La Jolla Shores, Powerhouse, Moonlight State Beach, Torrey Pines (parking is $20 here), and Mission Bay Tecolote Shores.
Spring Break is the perfect time to visit The Safari Park. It’s the birthing season when many animals have their babies (cuteness overload) and not too hot to walk the entire park. San Diego also has the only platypus outside of Australia. Don’t forget to go on the Africa Tram while you’re there! It’s on the complete opposite side of the park but it is well worth the walk. The tram tour is included with admission. Weekday mornings are the best time to visit when crowds are thinner and the animals are active.
